Jacob Staus landed in New Orleans, Louisiana on July 24th 1848, aboard a ship named Hannibal. From there he headed north to St. Louis, Missouri, where he married Katharina Reisen on January 9th, 1850. Their first child, Nicolaus, was born in 1851. Two daughters, Mary, (1854), and Anna, (1858), were also born to them. At some point in the 1850's, the family moved west and settled in the Benton County area.

Jacob joined the Benton County Home Guard (Union) during the early days of the U.S. Civil War, and was killed in The Battle of Cole Camp on June 19th, 1861 at the age of 36. He was buried in a mass grave with about 16 other guardsmen in this cemetery.
