Loreen Ruth Sears was the fifth daughter of ten children born to Thomas Marion Sears and Ida Jane Speak. She married Bert Isaac Griffin on 6 Sep 1923 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A traveling pastor, Bert moved his family around frequently. She and Bert had three children together; Helen Louise, Harold William, and Everett Thomas.
