She was a slave who had been owned by the seventh president of the United States, Andrew Jackson. Emeline lived as a nurse in the White House before being given to Mary Rachael Donelson, President Jackson's niece, as a christening present in 1832. Donelson moved to San Antonio, Texas in 1855 and brought Emeline with her. After she was freed, Emeline married and stayed in South Texas where she worked as a washer woman and had eight children. According to recorded data in the family Bible of her descendants, Emeline Miller was born in Maryland about 1810. Also, a newspaper clipping dated 1923 headlined, "Negro Woman is Dead: Once Nurse at White House." The news story went on to say she was believed to be 113 years old when she died.
