James W. Shepherd
SEPTEMBER 29, 1937 ~ AUGUST 20, 2018 (AGE 80)

When it came to friends and family, Jim was never in a hurry. He appreciated time shared, always over a cup of coffee.

During his final days, Jim drew family to Hiland Cottage in Petoskey to express their love and appreciation. He passed away August 20, 2018.

Jim was born on the family farm in Elmira, Michigan on September 29, 1937, the 11th child of Joseph and Nancy (Lacey) Shepherd. Both parents and the following siblings preceded him in death: Marvin, Harold, Esther Gates, Lloyd, Jeannette Richards, Donald, Velma Cooper, Vernon and Art; his son, Jeffery Shepherd, also preceded him in death. He is survived by his sister Verna Wilson; wife, Janet Froats-Shepherd, and nine children.

Jim’s home-spun beginning stayed with him, leading to an appreciation for small-town living. He spent his life in the Boyne City and Gaylord area. From a young age, he was car crazy and spent countless hours shopping for and restoring vintage cars and trucks. He was a long-time member of the Boyne Country Region Antique Automobile Clubs of America.

While young, Jim married Nancy Russell. Together they had four children: Jeffery Shepherd, Becky Shepherd, Nanette (Tom) Long and Leah (Kurt) Kleinschrodt. He later married Janet (Tisron) Froats. Together they had James (Joan) Shepherd and raised her children: Jerome Froats, Joseph (Deborah) Froats, Jill Nickhah, Jeffrey (Colleen) Froats and Janenne (Herman) Pung. He greatly enjoyed his wealth of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Jim was the owner of Jim Shepherd Painting. He was known for being honest and having pride in quality workmanship. Over the years, he included several sons in the business, teaching them character as much as craft.

Jim was always available to help people-rain or shine. He rescued and nurtured many stray dogs, always welcoming them to the family.

In honor of Jim’s desire to bring people together, all are welcome to attend his celebration of life from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, August 25 at the Boyne City Senior Center, 411 E. Division St. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution in Jim’s name to the Boyne City Senior Center, P.O. Box 964, Boyne City, Michigan 49712.
