Born in Dupont, daughter of the late Morris and Rebecca Major Mertz, she lived in Old Forge most of her life. Mrs. Birnbaum was a member of Bichur Cholim Congregation, Old Forge; Hadassah, and Mizrachi Women's Organization.
Surviving are sons, Harold, Old Forge; Earl, Scranton; daughter, Mrs. Connie Krotick, Kingston; brothers, Harry Mertz, Pittston; Joseph Mertz, Scranton; five grandchildren. Her husband, Samuel, preceded her in death in 1970.
Funeral will be Thursday at 2:30 from Ziman Funeral Home, 612 Gibson St., Scranton, with Rabbi Max Posnansky and Cantor Israel Dubner of Beth Sho Shalom officiating. Interment in Dalton Jewish Cemetery.
