Aged Woman Cast Her First Political Vote In 1920
Mrs. Jane Jones, who celebrated her ninety-ninth birthday a few months ago, died yesterday afternoon at the home of her niece, Mrs. C. R. Botsford at Cumberland, according to a dispatch last night.
For the last twenty-two years Mrs. Jones lived with her niece, who is the wife of the pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church. She had many friends there and also was well known in Baltimore, where she lived for a number of years.
Survived By Two Daughters
Mrs. Jones is survived by two daughters, both of whom live in Baltimore. They are Mrs. Mollie Cleaveland, 3533 Liberty Heights avenue, and Mrs. Octavia Schweizer, 3900 Hawthorne avenue.
She was born in Poplar Springs, Md., October 10. 1825, and was the daughter of Francis Beveridge, a veteran of the War of 1812. For a number of years Mrs. Jones made her home with her father in Baltimore.
In 1845 she was married to Capt. Francis Wharf, a merchant ship master. Some years later Captain Wharf lost his life at sea and his widow married John Jones, of Baltimore. The couple lived in this city until Mr. Jones' death in 1877.
Cast First Vote In 1920
For the last seventy-five years Mrs. Jones was an active member of the Baptist Church. In 1920 she cast her first political vote for President Harding.
Funeral services will be held Sunday night at St. John's Lutheran Church, Cumberland. The body will be brought to Baltimore Monday. Burial will be in Baltimore Cemetery after another service in the chapel of the cemetery.
