With her husband, Thomas Edwards, Anne K Edwards Allen founded Edwards Pastry Shop, still famous for its pies, and was the force behind the business, according to her son, Ronald Edwards.
"Dad was a good salesman, but as far as the persistence of things, that was Mom. She ran the inside things, he ran the outside things," said her son, who lives in Atlanta.
Mrs Allen, 82, of Atlanta died Monday of a heart attack.
Thomas Edwards had been a distributor for an Atlanta bakery before World War II, and after the war decided that the bakery's products were inferior, the son said. In 1950, the couple opened a retail pastry shop on Howell Mill Road and made deliveries from there.
The business became Edwards Baking Co.
Although the Edwardses divorced within five years, his mother still is regarded as "the mustard seed" of the business, Ronald Edwards said.
Mrs Allen was the widow of Adel Allen, and lived for a time in Jenkinsburg. She was a native of Forest Park, and at her death was living in Kings Bridge Retirement Community in Atlanta.
In 1993, Mrs Allen founded the Carolyn Edwards Group Home for mentally handicapped women, said her son, for whose daughter the group home is named. "Mama wanted to help women who need help. Mama was like that, a very giving person. And, there was a lot of cheer about her," he said. "Helping someone brought her the most joy."
The funeral will be at 10 am today at A S Turner and Sons, with burial in Westview Cemetery. Survivors include another son, Thomas Joel Edwards of Amelia Island, Fla; and two sisters, Lucile Kitchens of Sun City, Fla, and Hazel Rowe of Conyers.
