The son of Owen & Lydia (Lee) Griest, he was as shoemaker by trade and he stood 5' 3" tall and had brown hair and blue eyes.

He enlisted in the army at the stated age of twenty-two at Carlisle as "Griest" January 20, 1870, assigned to Troop I, 6th U.S. Cavalry, and discharged for disability October 1871 at Fort Riley, Kansas, a private.

His death certificate was listed as "Griest," but that was crossed out and replaced with "Greist" despite the fact that the document spells his parents' names "Griest."
