A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 12 at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Columbus. Visitation will be from 9:30-10:30 a.m. on Friday at the church, with interment at St. Bonaventure Cemetery.
Helen Melcher was born Jan. 20, 1933, in Columbus to JB and Sophie (Moersen) Ternes.
She grew up in Columbus and graduated from St. Bonaventure High School. She continued her education at Creighton and Marquette Universities and received her Bachelor's Degree in English and History.
Helen married Jerald Melcher in Columbus at St. Bonaventure Church.
Helen taught for a short time, but primarily raised her family. They lived in York and Hastings for a few years before returning to Columbus to finish raising their family. Helen moved to Omaha, to Colorado after her husband's death, and eventually to Lincoln where she has resided for the last few years. While living in Colorado, Helen was active in the Sister Carmen Food Bank which she really enjoyed. She enjoyed reading, keeping up on current events, and most of all, following and supporting her grandchildren in their activities.
Helen is survived by son Tom (Michelle) Melcher of Lafayette, Colorado; daughter Anne (Paul) Fullmer of Beatrice, daughter Jane Nelson of Santa Fe, New Mexico; eight grandchildren: Patrick, Erin, Megan, Ben, Kelsey, Matthew, Andrew and Laura; three great-grandchildren: Poppy, Hutchins, and Sawyer; brother Dick (Rose) Ternes of Columbus.
She is preceded in death by husband Jerald Melcher, parents JB and Sophie Ternes, and son-in-law Paul Nelson.
