Born in Champaign County, Illinois, one of six children of James and Ellen (Roth) Whalen.

"Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Gentleman were held Saturday at 9 A.M. in St. Lawrence Church with Rev. S. J. Zukowski reading the funeral mass. Burial was in the family plot at St. Patrick's cemetery in Platte Center, with father O'Brien officiating at the grave. Pallbearers were Charles Whalen of Omaha, Jack Bryant and Steve Kubas, both of Silver Creek and three grandsons, Charles, James and Edward of Silver Creek. Relatives and friends from a distance attending the services were Mr. and Mrs. Murt Whalen and two sons, Charles and Raymond; Mrs. Catherine Doyle and daughters, Misses Eileen and Hannah, all from Omaha; Mr. and Mrs. Edward Gentleman and son, Thomas of North Platte. and Mr. and Mrs. Ed Kavanaugh of Columbus. Mary Whalen was born January 1, 1867 in Champaign County, Illinois, the eldest daughter of James and Ellen Whalen. As a young lady she moved to Platte Center on October 3, 1887. She was a pioneer teacher in Platte County and it was while teaching in district 28 that she experienced the blizzard of January 12, 1888. She and her fifteen pupils were forced to remain in the school house overnight during the storm. On September 11, 1888 she was married to William Gentleman at St. Mary's church in Platte County. Mr. Gentleman passed on shortly after their moving to Silver Creek in 1928. Mrs. Gentleman was a devout Catholic and active in church circles until her health failed several years ago. Surviving are two sons, John of Silver Creek, and Edward of North Platte, one sister, Mrs. Catherine Doyle of Omaha and two brothers, Murt Whalen of Omaha and William Whalen of Penfield, Ill.; six grand-Children and two great-grandchildren."
