Although his grave marker gives his birth year as 1889, his WW 1 draft registration gave his date of birth as Jan. 15, 1883, and and his WW II and Social Security records give his date of birth as Jan. 15, 1883. Those years come closer to approximating the ages given during census records. He was apparently illiterate at the time of his WW I draft registration as he made a mark rather than signing his draft registration.

The 1920 census recorded Woody Campbell, 34, living in Elgin, Bastrop, Texas, with wife Maggie Campbell, 20, and childen: Sidny, 5; and Cleo, 6 months.

The 1940 census recorded Woody Campbell, 57, living on a farm in Bastrop County, Texas, with wife Maggie Campbell, 42, and children: Adolph, 18; James L., 14; Juanita, 12; Mary E., 11; Roy E., 7; Mildred M., 4; and Woody, Jr., 9 months.

His son James Lester Campbell, Seaman 2nd Class, USNR, is listed among Naval combat casualties in a book of WW II casualties in combat zones in WW II. No other information about his service, death, or any memorials have been found.
