Deacon Lillie Mosby Brown, a mother, a grandmother, was born on October 25, 1928 in Lynchburg, Virginia. She was educated in grammar schools and graduated from Dunbar High School in Virginia in 1945. A graduate of Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina, she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1949, Elementary Teacher Certification from Kean College in Union, New Jersey, and her Master in Social Work degree from Rutgers University in New Brunswick in 1967.
Lillie married the late Charles Brown, Sr. in 1949 and was blessed with two sons, Charles Jr. and Michael S. In 1950, they lived in Roselle and later lived in Cranford for 14 years. In 1966, they moved back to Roselle.
She was a member of First Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Alfred E. Brown, Jr. During her church membership, she was a Deacon, former member of the Senior Choir and President, Superintendent and Teacher of Sunday school, President of the Sarah Cyrus Missionary Society, member of the Activity Committee, Secretary of the Trustee Board and Chairperson of the Church Development Fund Committee. In the community-at-large, she served as President of Church Women United of New Jersey in Cranford for 10 years but she gave her time and support for over 40 years, Life Member and Executive Committee member of AARP Roselle branch, Active Seniors Union County area, the Cranford Interfaith Human Relations Committee, served as Secretary, two separate terms as President of the Women’s Department of the New Jersey Convention of Progressive Baptists and a member of the Celebration Choir of New Jersey.
The National Council of Negro Women, Roselle Section, was chartered in 1972. In subsequent years, the Roselle-Linden section became the Roselle section. Lillie was a member for forty-six years and held many offices, some double terms, not always sequential. She served as President, First Vice President, Financial Secretary, Recording Secretary and Chaplain. She was President for the second time. She was a life member of the Council and an achiever 15 times. The National Council of Negro Women sponsored Community projects such as contributions for the food bank, the Charles C. Polk Library, workshops for the public and certain affairs for the Senior Citizens as well as camperships for the youngsters on a local level. Many of the programs are on a National Level such as locations for the housing programs, location for day care, fighting juvenile delinquency, drugs, teenage pregnancy, job placement and educational.
She was a Subscribing Life and Executive Committee Member of the NAACP in Roselle and worked tirelessly with Mrs. Myrtle Counts. She was also a member of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and Bennett College Alumni Association. Lillie served as a member of the Roselle Local Assistance Board and attended the Municipal Welfare State Conference in Atlantic City during her tenure. She was a member of the board of Cranford Family Care.
She was a Poll Worker for the Board of Elections and a Committee Woman for the Republican Party in Ward #3, District #4 in Roselle.
Lillie was the Chairperson of the Community Advisory Board in the Department of Psychiatry at the Elizabeth General Medical Center. She was the Parliamentarian for the Alumnae and previously served as the President. Previously, she was a member of the National Association of Social Workers and served as the Chairperson of the Union County Unit. She previously held membership in the Association of Black Social Workers. She was a member of the Urban League of the Union County Guild and chaired the Black History Program held on February 1997at the Elizabeth Public Library. She volunteered to read to students in the Roselle Public School system.
She received the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Award presented by the Cranford Clergy Council and the Cranford Interfaith Human Relations Committee. She also received a Special Recognition Award by the Union County Human Relations Commission and was honored by Roselle Council for the Phenomenal Woman Award during Womens History Month in 2018.
Lillie retired from the Union County Division of Social Services in Elizabeth in a Supervisory capacity in 2002 after 40 years of service. She was also employed as Real Estate Sales Person at the Kiamie Agency, Inc. in Cranford.
She was a trailblazer in the community service and an example to younger women. Lillie was a woman of style and grace. She enjoyed to dance and was a dancer of the “Golden Girls and Guys Dance Troupe.”
She was predeceased by her son, Charles “Chucky” Brown, Jr. on May 4, 2018 and sister, Martha Brown in 1980.
