Professional Basketball Player. For seven seasons (1951 to 1958), he played at the center and power-forward positions in the National Basketball Association with the Milwaukee Hawks, Fort Wayne Pistons and New York Knicks. He played collegiate basketball at Brigham Young University and was a key member of the Cougars' squad which captured the NIT Championship in 1951. He achieved All-American honors that year. Selected by the Tri-Cities Blackhawks as the number 2 overall pick during the 1951 NBA Draft, he totaled 437 career regular season games. Hutchins, made an immediate impact on the league as he led the NBA with 880 total rebounds during his rookie season (1951-1952). He went on to establish himself as an early star of the league with his four-time selection as an NBA all-star. After retiring from basketball, he worked in the real estate industry. He was the younger brother of 1952 Miss America Pageant winner Colleen Kay Hutchins and the uncle of former NBA player Kiki VanDeWeghe.
