Grandma Griggs Suddenly Passes Away;
Also Mapleton's First Landlord.
The death of Grandma Griggs which occured at her home in Danville township, Tuesday night, came as a great surprise to that lady's many friends, as few were aware that she was even ill, as she had been sick only about a week. Some eight or ten days ago she was afflicted with bronchitis which became complicated with pnemonia. On Monday it was evident that she was growing weaker and her children were summoned home and nearly all were able to reach her bedside before the final summons.
Ruth E. Squires was born at Sutton, province of Quebec, Canada, in 1841, moving with her parents to Waupon, Wisconsin, in 1853, where seven years later she was united in marriage to Mr. Jeremy Griggs, who still survives to mourn his life's companion. Grandma Griggs was of that hardy type which composed the frontier mothers and witnessed her share of the early day hardships, not only of Wisconsin, but of Minnesota as well, as she and her husband came to this state just a half century ago and built for themselves a home in Danville township, this county. Here they worked and toiled as did other pioneers to carve out of the wilderness a farm and educate a growing family.
The deceased was in early life a member of the Episcopalian church, and there being no church of that denomination in this community, she never united with any other but always lived a christian life, being loved and respected by all who had the honor of her acquaintance. As a neighbor and friend her ministrations were widespread and many of the early settlers can testify to the kindliness with which she visited their homes in the hour of sickness and distress, Truly another of God's noble women has been called to her rest.
Mrs. Griggs leaves, besides her aged husband, four sons and three daughters and twenty granchildren. The daughters are: Mrs. Thomas Howieson, of Mapleton; Mrs. Charles Stevens, of Sterling; Mrs. Wm. Denison, of Amboy; the sons, Mr. Hiram Griggs, of Wayne, Nebraska; Mr. Wm. Griggs, of Nassau, Minnesota; Mr. Walter Griggs, of Minnesota Lake, and Mr. Chauncey Griggs, who resides on the home place in Danville. Mrs. Griggs also leaves one brother, Mr. Hiram Squires who lives at Valley Junction, Wisconsin.
The funeral will be held from the family home this Friday afternoon at one o'clock and will be conducted by Rev. Arthur G. Young, pastor of the Congregational church at this place. Interment will be in the Union cemetery at Mapleton.
