Joseph Abney, Sr. of 100 Atkinson Street, Apt. 24-E, Asheville NC, died peacefully on September 1, 2018 at Care Partners Hospice surrounded by family. He was born on February 26, 1938 to Willie Abney, Sr. and Maddie Abney.

Joseph was a longtime resident of Asheville, NC. He was a graduate of Stephens Lee High School and after graduation joined the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1957.

He enjoyed working on televisions and delivering newspapers.

In addition to his mother and father, Joseph is preceded in death by eight brothers and 3 sisters.

Joseph is survived by son, Joseph Abney, Jr., step-children; Fredrick (Carolyn) Clayton, Vanessa Clayton, Tijuana (Charles) Green, granddaughter, Ori J. Abney all of Asheville, siblings Dorothea Hermany on Asheville, brother, Edward Abney of Maryland, and a host of nieces and nephews.

The Homegoing Service for Mr. Abney will be held on Thursday, September 13, 2018 at 12pm at Brown Temple CME Church, 32 Phifer Street, Asheville, NC. Bishop William Ray will be the officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow immediately after the services at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain.
