James was the son of Charles Charlton. He was born in Bursted, Sussex, England. He married Mary (last name possibly Druce or Akers) about 1821. She died 12 Sep 1841. He married Clara Hickman on 30 Jul 1843 in St Martins in the Field, England. He was a dealer in leather and textiles but fell on hard times about 1845. He was in and out of the workhouse (aka poor house) with his younger children, Emma (b. 1825), Maria (b. 1826), George (b. 1837), William (b. 1833), Charles (b. 1831), and James (b. 1829), and his second wife, Clara. After an injury to his knee, his leg was amputated and due to complications, he died in the workhouse.
