Slugger was born on February 22, 1930 in the Town of Meeme to the late Leslie and Edna (Karstaedt) Henschel. He was a 1948 graduate of Kiel High School. He joined the United States Army and proudly served his country for four years in the 82nd AirBorne Division. Slugger also worked for Tecumseh until retiring in 1992. On October 9, 1965, he married Madge Kahl at Bethel UCC in Elkhart Lake.
One of Slugger’s greatest passions in life was hitting the baseball diamonds, whether it was playing baseball or umping baseball and softball games in the lakeshore area. In 1987, he was inducted into the Lakeshore Hall of Fame. He shared his passion with his family spending many days and nights at baseball games. Besides baseball, Slugger loved hunting, fishing, playing beanbags, playing the stumpf fiddle, drinking beer, and cheering on the New York Yankees and Kansas City Chiefs. He enjoyed vacationing Up North and spending time with his dogs.
Slugger is survived by his loving wife, Madge; his six children: Nancy Henschel, Cliff Henschel (Patti Hiers), Chad Henschel, Clint Henschel, Curt Henschel, and Clete (Kim) Henschel; his six grandchildren: Dakota Henschel (Sami Krupp), Amanda Henschel (Brett Anholt), Emma Evenson, Andrea Henschel, Bryce Henschel, and Carter Henschel. He is further survived by his sister, Barbara (Jan) VanSpijker; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Georgianna Modtland, Madeline Smith, Leonard (Patty) Kahl, Sheila (Kenneth) Roepcke; and many other nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Slugger is preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Stanley Henschel, and numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Funeral Services for Slugger will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, January 3, 2018 at St. James UCC in Spring Valley (13312 Pioneer Road, Newton) with the Rev. Dr. Ernest Huntzinger officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will greet relatives and friends at the church from 11:00 am until the time of service at 2:00 pm.
