Professional Hockey Player. He played at the position of defence for seven seasons (1933 to 1940), in the National Hockey League with the Ottawa Senators, St. Louis Eagles, and the Detroit Red Wings. With the St. Louis Eagles, he scored the first penalty shot goal in NHL history in a game against the Montreal Maroons on November 13, 1934. During the game he shot the famous goal at the legendary goalie Alec Connell and won the game 2-1. He also appeared in two Stanley Cup Championship Games with the St. Louis Blues in 1936 and 1937. Born Ralph Blaylock Bowman in Winnipeg, he began playing hockey in the minors when he played eight games in one year with the Toronto Canoe Club in the Ontario Hockey Association (or OHA). He then played for the Niagara Falls Cataracts in the Ontario Hockey Association (or OHA) for three seasons (1930 to 1933), and went onto help the team win the Memorial Cup in 1933. The club later relocated to the Ottawa area and he signed with the Ottawa Senators in the NHL. He eventually went onto play for the St. Louis Eagles and the Detroit Red Wings before retiring from the NHL. In 274 NHL games, he collected eight goals, 25 points and 260 minutes in penalties. After retiring from the National Hockey League he returned to the minors and played for the Indianapolis Capitals (1939 to 1940, IAHL), Pittsburgh Hornets (1940 to 1941, AHL), Providence Reds (1941 to 1942, AHL), Philadelphia Rockets (1941 to 1942, AHL), Hershey Bears (1942 to 1943, AHL), and the Washington Lions (1942 to 1943, AHL). He retired form the minors in 1943 as a player and went onto coach hockey for a number of years. He passed away in 1990 at the age of 79. He is an "Honored Member " of the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame and is slated for posthumous induction into the Hall in 2019.
