On Wednesday, January 23rd, 2019, our most beloved, Joyce Marie Cook passed away. She was 72 years of age.

One of four children, Joyce Marie Rollins was born on August 10th, 1946 at Oceana. She was the daughter of the late Abe and Sarah Lewis Rollins. Her brothers, William Arthur and Thomas have preceded her in death. Joyce is the dear sister of Rosa Lee Bragg and her husband, Charles of Fairdale.

Joyce spent her childhood at Kopperston, graduating from Oceana High School, she would further her studies, first training as a certified nursing assistant and then attended the Mercer County Vocational School where she studied to be a licensed practical nurse. Joyce loved nursing. She then pursued a degree at Bluefield State College as a registered nurse. Joyce worked for 30 years in the special care unit at Raleigh General Hospital taking care of the newborn. There were two things in life that meant everything to Joyce her family and the babies that she took care of.

Joyce was married to Lanty Cook and they made their home in Lester. Joyce was blessed with four children, Robert Brown and his wife, Marilyn of Fairdale, Christina Goff and her husband Douglas of Harrisonburg, Virginia, Lonnie Cook and his wife, Jennifer of Tolleytown. Her daughter, Tammy Rose Cook died in 1982, Lanty would pass in 2008. Joyce was the proud “Nannie” of Elizabeth, Robert II, Eva, Michael, Dustin, Christian, Courtney and Ian and the great-grandmother of Kaitlyn, Henry and Hope.

On Sunday, January 27th, at 1:00 pm there will be a “Service of Remembrance in the Melton Mortuary Chapel. Pastor Robert Brown will be officiating. The family will be receiving friends at 12 noon. Burial will follow in the Kopperston Community Cemetery.

And so now we say goodbye to our wonderful mother. She lived for her children and the little ones she so lovingly took care of throughout her dedicated career as a nurse. God speed until we all meet again.
