Peter was a physician. His father, James Lyons, was a prominent Virginia politician and member of the Confederate Congress from 1862 to 1864.

Peter married Adeline Abbott Deane in Richmond on 22 April 1862. They had at least three children: Elizabeth, Adeline and Lucille ("Lulie").

After briefly serving as Surgeon of the 1st Virginia Infantry, he enlisted in Company "F", 21st Virginia Infantry on 21 April 1861. He also served briefly with the 1st Infantry Regiment, Wise's Legion (later the 46th Virginia Infantry Regiment) before being appointed an Assistant Surgeon, Confederate States Medical Department on 17 September 1861. He was appointed Surgeon in 1862, and served in various commands in Richmond and elsewhere. He was surrendered with the rest of Gen. Robert E. Lee's forces at Appomattox Court House on 9 April 1865.

He died age 43 at the Valentine House of "Ulceration of Bowels," per state and Cemetery records. His grave, near his mother and several siblings, was marked in 2022 through the efforts of the Friends of Shockoe Hill Cemetery.
