Josephine was the daughter of Heningham Watkins Lyons and James Lyons. James Lyons was a Judge that served in the Confederate States Congress. Josephine's husband, William Beverly Stanard, was also the child of a prominent Judge, Robert C. Stanard. Josephine married William Beverly Stanard on 1 December 1847. The portrait of her shown is by George Lethbridge Saunders, and is owned by the Valentine Museum of Richmond. It is part of the National Portrait Gallery. It is watercolor on Ivory, executed in 1847.
