When Benjamin was very young, he and his parents and his mother's three children from a previous marrige moved from Tennessee to Ohio. They later moved to Indiana. From the records of the Springfield Meeting we learn that Benjamin may have been a rowdy young man. In 1825, when he was age 20, he was reported for drinking and using profane language. Then on April 13, 1825, he was disowned (by the Quaker Meeting) for fighting.

On October 27, 1825, in Wayne County, Indiana, he married Frances Grey/Gray. Those two then moved to Stoney Creek Township, Randolph County, Indiana (1830 census). They had at least seven children.

A few years later Benjamin and Frances moved to Cass County, IN where Benjamin bought a farm in 1840. He was listed as a witness to a Will on May 7, 1842. His real estate was valued at $1,500 in 1850. Frances died in 1851 and Benjamin later married Phoebe A. Mingle - on March 27, 1853. After Benjamin died in 1857 his farm and property in Cass County, IN were sold.
