Robert P. Schmitz "What-a-Day", age 78, of 7923 Scheffler Road, Newton, died Wednesday afternoon, June 26, 2013 at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc.

He was born on January 2, 1935 in Manitowoc, son of the late Peter & Emma (Steger) Schmitz. Bob graduated from Rapids Elementary School and was a member of the National Guard. On September 3, 1955 he married the former LaVerne Dehne. He was employed at Aluminum Specialty of Manitowoc for 13 years and then with Kohler Corp. of Kohler, WI for 31 years in the pottery division, retiring in March of 1997.

Survivors include his wife: LaVerne Schmitz, Newton; four daughters and sons-in-law: Lynne & Stan Musial, rural Manitowoc, Lori & Roger Holschbach, rural Manitowoc, Lois & Dick Refshauge, Waterloo, IA, Louise & Holmes Smotherman, Manitowoc; two sons and daughters-in-law: Larry & Aggie Schmitz, rural Manitowoc, Lee & Terri Schmitz, Newton; 17 grandchildren: Brian Musial, Lisa Musial & fiancé Ricky Alverez, Valerie Maigatter & special friend Josh Maule, Vanessa Holschbach-Shimek & special friend Chris Heinen, Kenny Tadych & special friend Cydney Hall, Kevin Tadych & special friend Sarah Russell, Amy Wagner & special friend Johnny McWilliams, Ryan Wagner & special friend Caila Fredrick, Emilee Wagner & special friend Dan Sutto, Kyle Wagner, Dillon Smotherman, Chris (Amber) Schmitz, Brittany Schmitz & special friend Craig Reimer, Kassi Schmitz & fiancé Matt Prater, Corey Schmitz, Hannah Schmitz, Kendra Schmitz; five step grandchildren: Brandon (Kailyn) Smotherman, Dexter (Bethany) Smotherman, T.J. Smotherman & special friend Stephanie, Robert (Tiffany) Smotherman, Tanya (Chris) Pozega; great grandchildren: Clayton Rogers, Dyahnee Booker, Bryant McWilliams, Maxwell Maigatter, Grant Maigatter, Haiden Schmitz, Gavin Schmitz, Mariah Musial, Joscelyn Tadych, Tanner Tadych, Maryssa Alvarez, Taylor Alvarez, Lilly Shimek, Callie Junk, Owen Prater, Charlie Prater and Baby Schmitz coming in August; a sister: Helen Hebert, Manitowoc and a sister-in-law: Verlene Kollath, Manitowoc. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was also preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law: Walter & Ida Dehne; six sisters-in-law and five brothers-in-law: Florence & Orville Mott, Leona & Cliff Helke, Ruth & Russell Mott, Jeanette & Bill Schmalfeldt, Eleanor & John Fischer, Carol Behringer; and three brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law: Del Hebert, Don Kollath and Walter & Maureen Dehne.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 1, 2013 at Salem-Ebenezer Reformed Church, Newton. Officiating at the Service will be the Rev. Kyle Sorenson with burial at St. John's Cemetery, Newton.

The family will greet relatives and friends at Salem-Ebenezer Reformed Church, Newton, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Sunday, June 30, 2013. Friends may also call Monday morning from 9:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m.

Bob enjoyed woodworking, spending time at his vacation home in Crivitz with family and many friends who knew him as "What a Day."

Bob's gentle smile and light-hearted laughter will be greatly missed, until that day when we will meet again in heaven, "What a Day" that will be, when we will touch . . . the green, green grass of home.
