Professional Soccer Player. Considered by many the best goalkeeper of his era, he was the winning goalkeeper for England in their 1966 World Cup Final victory over Germany, 4-2. He is also well known for a save he made in the 1970 World Cup tournament versus Pele. He played 73 times for England and played 628 games in the then English First Division, for Leicester City and Stoke City. He won the League Cup in 1964 with Leicester and in 1972 with Stoke and thrid place at the 1968 European Championships with England. After an auto accident which cost him the sight in one eye in 1972 ended his English career, he played for Fort Lauderdale Strikers of the NASL in 1977 and 1978. He was named FIFA Goalkeeper of the year in 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, and 1971 and to the 1966 World Cup All Star Team in 1966. Pele named him to his FIFA 100 (his list of the top 100 players of all time) in 2004, on the occasion of the 100th Anniversary of the founding of FIFA. He was one of the first class of players inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame.
