US Congressman. A member of the Republican Party, he served Michigan's 18th (1957 to 1973 and 1983 to 1993) and 19th (1973 to 1983) Congressional Districts in the United States House of Representatives. He studied at Michigan State University and during World War II, he served with the United States Army Air Corps. Following his return home, he made a name for himself in the real estate industry as a land developer and in 1948, he was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives (1949 to 1954). He served in the Michigan State Senate (1955 to 1956), prior to his election to Congress. He succeeded George Dondero as US Congressman and during his lengthy tenure, he served on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs. In 1967, President Johnson appointed Broomfield to the United Nations General Assembly. He served as a delegate to the anti-arms race SALT talks with the Soviet Union. After retiring from politics, he was active in several charitable causes.
