The Greybeard Regiment has a unique place in history. It was the only regiment made up of men over the enlistment or draft age which at that time was 45. All were volunteers...some as old as 80 years. Its purpose was to guard prisons and arsenals to free young men for battle however it did see action when guarding supply trains and defending Memphis,TN during a surprise attack from the infamous cavalry of Nathan Bedford Forrest.
