Our gggrandfather, Stephen Gardner Hooker, was born in Brandon,Vermont in 1820. He was a son of Stephen Hooker and Abigail Goss Hooker.

He married Helen Nash Norton in NY in 1849. They had two children, Alice and Edward, while living in NY and they moved to IL around 1852.

He was an early resident of Chicago, IL and was a Grain Commission Dealer. Also an early founding member of the Chicago Board of Trade.

He helped his family, and others, get to safety on Goose Island during the Great Fire of 1871. A street, N.Hooker Street, was later named after him on Goose Island.

Stephen died at age 76 on January 1, 1901 from a fall down the stairs in the family home.

He and his wife Helen had a large family: Alice Gertrude Hooker Wadsworth, Edward C Hooker, Chester W Hooker, Nellie Hooker Ringsborg, & George Graves Hooker. These five all grew to adulthood and had families.

They had additional children who died in childhood: Freddie C, Rolla N, Clarence A, and Harry S.

Buried in the family Lot according to the cemetery are: Stephen G, Helen N, Edward C, George Graves, Blanche Hooker (George's 2nd wife) and Jerome Beardsley Hooker, son of Edward C. Also 5 children that didn't make it to adulthood - Freddie, Rolla, Clarence, Harry, & Baby Hooker (believed to be stillborn child of our ggrandparents George Graves Hooker & wife, Nina Preston Hooker)who died in 1905.
