Our gggrandmother, Helen Nash Norton Hooker, was one of 15 children of Burroughs Norton and Margaret Weber/Weaver (of early pioneer family of Mohawk Valley, NY).

Her family moved around quite a bit and she was born on their dairy farm about 10 miles from Herkimer, NY.

She married Stephen Gardner Hooker on June 12, 1849 in Springville, NY. They moved to Chicago, IL about 1852.

She and her family lived through the Great Fire in Chicago and lost their lovely home to the flames. They took refuge on Goose Island when her husband rowed the family and others to the island in a small boat.

She and Stephen had 12 children, 5 of which grew to adulthood. We know of Alice Gertrude and William Chester, both born in NY, as well as a daughter Frances H, who also died in NY. Alice Gertrude Hooker Wadsworth, Edward C Hooker, Chester W Hooker, Helen Nash "Nellie" Hooker Ringsborg who married a Swedish citizen and moved to Sweden where she lived until 1945, & George Graves Hooker. These five all grew to adulthood and had families.

They had additional children who died in childhood: Frances H died/buried in NY; William Chester aka Chester, Freddie C, Rolla N, Clarence A, and Harry S, all died and buried in Graceland Cemetery, Chicago, IL.

Buried in the family Lot according to the cemetery are: Stephen G, Helen N, Edward C, George Graves, Blanche Hooker (George's 2nd wife) and Jerome Beardsley Hooker, son of Edward C. Also 6 children that didn't make it to adulthood - William C (Chester); Freddie, Rolla, Clarence, Harry, & Baby Hooker (believed to be stillborn child of our ggrandparents George Graves Hooker (died 1921 of kidney failure probably due from cholera caught during Spanish-American War) & wife, Nina Preston Hooker (died in 1905 of septicemia after gall bladder surgery in Chicago, IL).
