Ernest Jennings Hinderaker was born on June 12, 1914, the son of Joseph and Ella (Britson) Hinderaker, on the Hinderaker farm northwest of Radcliffe. Ernest was baptized and confirmed in Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Radcliffe, Iowa. He attended country schools thru the eighth grade, then attended Radcliffe High School. Ernie was united in marriage to Ethel Severson on Dec. 12, 1937 at Des Moines, Iowa.

For a number of years, he farmed north of Radcliffe, until he started a radio and television sales and service business. He operated the business at the farm and eventually moved the shop and his home to Radcliffe. In 1972, Ernie closed the TV and radio business and started working for Mid-Iowa Workshop in Marshalltown, Iowa as a supervisor and chauffeur. Ernie retired in 1979. During his working and retirement years, he was a school board member for Buckeye School, a member of the Radcliffe City Council, a deacon for Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, and belonged to the Kiwanis. He enjoyed hunting, golfing and wood carving throughout his life and until the time of his illness.

Ernest passed away on November 7, 1984 at Mary Greeley Medical Center of cancer. Those remaining to cherish his memory are his mother, Ella, of Bethany Manor in Story City, Iowa, his wife, Ethel, of Radcliffe, Iowa, 3 sons , 7 grandchildren, 3 brothers and 2 sisters. He was preceded in death by his father and one son, Ernest, Jr. and one brother, Harvey.
