Leon was a versatile driver who appeared in hot rods as well as AAA and USAC events. His racing career ended on September 9th, 1962 during a sprint car race at New Bremen, Ohio when a rock shattered his goggles causing him to lose an eye. After retirement Leon worked as a mechanic at a Ford dealership.
Leon Clum was a 4 time entrant of the Indianapolis 500. In 1960 his rookie test was denied due to lack of experience. In 1961 he was assigned to the #77 Dayton Steel Foundry Special in which he passed his rookie test, practiced but did not complete his qualification attempt. In 1962 he practiced in two cars, the #6 Bell Lines Trucking Special in which he did not complete his qualification attempt and the #23 Turtle Drilling Special in which he spun on the first lap of his qualification run, not completing the attempt. The car was not damaged but no other qualifying attempts were made.
