Hall of Fame Professional Golfer. She was best known to golf fans for her twenty-one LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) victories and two major championship wins during a career that spanned four decades. She was also one of the co-founders of the LPGA in 1950. She started playing golf at the age of 12 and later won three Kansas State Amateur Championships (1946-1948). While attending the University of Kansas, she won the national individual intercollegiate golf championship in 1949. She turned professional that same year and a year later, was one of the thirteen women golfers who formed the LPGA. She went on to win twenty-one LPGA tournaments and two major championships (1963 and 1964 Titleholders Championship) from 1954 to 1972. She also finished in the top ten on the LPGA money list nine times from 1961 to 1972. In 1963, she earned the LPGA Most Improved Player award. She also served as the president of the LPGA from 1958 to 1960. In 1973, she became the first woman to work on a men's golf tournament television broadcast. In 2006, she was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.
