"Dorothy Van Doren, 96, author, editor and widow of the poet and critic, Mark Van Doren, passed away on Sunday, 26 February 1993, due to pneumonia at the Sharon Hospital, Sharon, Connecticut, where she lived.

"Dorothy was born in San Francisco, California on 2 May 1896, but was raised in New York City, New York and graduated from Barnard College.

"She published four novels, including 'Those First Affections' in 1938, a highly-praised effort which created the subjective world of a young girl. She then wrote lighthearted autobiography: 'The Country Wife', written in 1950, was an informal discourse on matrimony, parenthood and life as an amateur farmer in Connecticut; 'The Professor and I', written in 1959, told of life with her husband, Mark, an award-winning poet; and 'Men, Women and Cats', written in 1960, which described more of Dorothy's observations on family life.

"For many years, Dorothy was an editor on The Nation. During WWII, she ran the English desk for the Office of War Information (nka the Voice of America).

"Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Mark, on 10 December 1972.

"Left to cherish her memory are Dorothy's sons, Charles (Geraldine), of Cornwall, Connecticut and Cortona, Italy, and John (Mira) Van Doren, of Evanston, Illinois; four grandchildren and one great-grandson."

She was the daughter, and only child of George Graffe and Francis "Fannie" Lane.
