John was the son of William Cockey (1650 - 1697), the Immigrant.

John married Elizabeth (Slade) Cockey Baker (c.1685 - 5 Aug 1780) in 1712 as her first husband.

In 1728, John purchased land near the Patapsco River. In 1732, he was a Justice of Baltimore County, and the same year he one of the Commissioners appointed to lay off 10 acres east of the Jones Falls as an addition to Baltimore Town. He was a vestryman of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in (now) Baltimore City from 1722-23 and from 1733-35. In the 1737 Baltimore County Levy Papers, John Cockey received a bounty for squirrel heads.

The earliest segment of “Oakdene” at 12025 Greenspring Valley Road in Brooklandville was built at the beginning of the 18th century by Capt. John Cockey.

John and Elizabeth were the original owners of the estate now known as Brooklandwood in the Green Spring Valley, which later was acquired by Charles Carroll, the Signer.

On 29 Mar 1745, the co-heirs of William Cockey conveyed 300 acres of “Cockey’s Trust” to John. This was probably the co-heirs of John’s brother, William Cockey, Jr.

John wrote his will on 22 May 1740 in Baltimore County, Maryland:
• To eldest son, William Cockey, “Cockey’s Folly,” 200 acres on north side of the Jones Falls in Baltimore County, 100 acres taken off three tracts, “Cockey’s Trust,” “Helmore,” and “Helmore’s Addition”.
• To son, John Cockey, the remaining 678 acres of the three tracts where my dwelling plantation stands, and a bed.
• To son, Joshua Cockey, “Tye’s Delight” 100 acres, “Cow Hill” 100 acres, both on the north side Jones Falls, and a bed.
• To son Edward Cockey, “Cockey’s Delight” 170 acres on the north side Jones Falls, and a bed.
• To son, Peter Cockey, £100 to buy land, and a bed.
• To son, Thomas Cockey, my gold watch and six silver spoons.
• To daughter, Sarah Cockey, a bed.
• The rest of my personal estate to sons William, John, Joshua, Edward, and Peter Cockey and my daughters. Susanna Gist, Mary Owings, and Sarah Cockey.
• The executors were his son, William Cockey, and his son-in-law, Joshua Owings.
• The witnesses were Michael Diskin, William Harvey, and Alexander Tanzey.
• On 5 Nov 1746, the will was sworn to by Diskin and Harvey, and on 17 Apr 1747 was affirmed by Tanzey (Quaker).

John and Elizabeth were originally buried in a Cockey family cemetery in the Green Spring Valley at the top of a slight hill about 300 yards from Falls Road. Their gravemarkers, and two others, were moved to St. Thomas' Episcopal Church, Owings Mills, and are resting against a wall in Lot 123 of the Church Yard.
