WTC worker helped friends evacuate on 9/11

Nellie Cipollone, 44, of West Brighton, a former Port Authority worker and program manager for the World Trade Center, died Saturday at home. The cause of death is pending an autopsy.

Born Nellie Caban in Queens, she grew up in Brooklyn and attended Eli Whitney High School. She moved to West Brighton in 1991.

For the majority of her professional career, Mrs. Cipollone worked in the procurement department of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. While there, she attended Adelphi (N.Y.) University and graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in business administration.

Mrs. Cipollone was working in the World Trade Center during the 1993 bombing and the terrorist attack on Sept. 11, 2001. According to her friend of 10 years, Lucy Foster of Annadale, Mrs. Cipollone refused to leave the building that day without Mrs. Foster by her side.

"She saved my life," said Mrs. Foster, noting that Mrs. Cipollone also helped others in the smoke-filled stairwells trying to exit the building. Following 9/11, Mrs. Cipollone continued working as a program manager for the World Trade Center construction department, which is overseeing the construction of the new building.

Mrs. Cipollone was very sociable, always looking forward to having a good time and constantly expanding her large circle of friends.

"She drew you in with her smile," Ms. Foster said.

It was through a group of mutual friends that Mrs. Cipollone met her husband, James. They would have been married 14 years this May.

In her leisure time, Mrs. Cipollone enjoyed going to the beach, and traveling to the Cayman Islands, where she and her husband became certified scuba divers.

Mrs. Cipollone enjoyed cycling, and was very health-conscious. She enjoyed spending time with her sister, Gloria, her best friend, her family said.

However, time spent with her 5-year-old son, James, was something she loved most of all.

"She adored her son - loved him to no end," her family said, noting that she often took him to the park and the zoo.

"Her family was her life," her husband said.

In addition to her husband, James, and her son, James, surviving Mrs. Cipollone are her mother, Maria Caban; two brothers, John Caban Jr. and Ricky Caban, and a sister, Gloria Rodriguez.

The funeral will be Thursday from the Harmon Home for Funerals with a mass at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart R.C. Church, both West Brighton. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery, also West Brighton.
