I am related to my Uncle Aldo through my great-great grandmother, Maria Ottaviani Lanzi. He was born in Rome, where he met and married my Aunt Joanne in 1948. They came to Detroit, where he learned English and together they opened Aldo's Restaurant on Kelly Road just north of 7 Mile Road in 1950. Aunt Joanne worked in the front, while Uncle Aldo was the Chef in the kitchen. He closed that restaurant in 1989 and opened Andiamo's in Warren that same year.

I remember when I brought a date there once in the late 1970s, Uncle Aldo came to our table when he was told I was there. He poured us a shot of Ouzo and then had us get up. My date asked where we were going and I said, he was going to show us the kitchen........and he did! It was pristine; no hospital was ever this clean. He had us taste something and asked our opinion. When my date went to pay, he refused to let us. I told my mother about it the next day. Mom asked what the tab was and she sent him a check. About a week later, my mother got a call from Uncle Aldo and he chewed her out royally about it. He knew we were a couple of young kids who didn't have two dimes to rub together and didn't want us to sacrifice to pay the tab. He sent Mom the check back, and not another word was said about it.

Aldo's was the only restaurant my grandfather would eat at, so that ought to tell you something right there. It was a wonderful place and Aldo and Joanne made it so special. We all loved Uncle Aldo; he was a major part of our family, and we all miss him so much!
