WALTERBORO: William Thomas Lohr, 81, of Walterboro, SC, died at his home on Monday, April 22, 2019 with his wife by his side, after a long illness. The family will receive friends at Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home in Walterboro on Wednesday evening, April 24, 2019 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. The funeral service will also be held at Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home on Thursday, April 25, 2019 at 11:00 o’clock. Entombment will follow at the Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
“Tom”, son of William Murray Lohr and Thelma Callahan Lohr, was born in High Point, NC and was member of St. Jude’s Church in Walterboro. He is survived by his wife, Patti Barr Lohr, and was pre-deceased by his first wife, Patsy Jones Lohr.
Lohr was a graduate of High Point College and received his M.ED. from the University of North Carolina. He was a retired School Administrator and former teacher. He was an All Conference Player in his senior year at Trinity High School in Baseball and Basketball. He was a member of a local Rock and Roll Band, while in college, and also sang with the Folk group, “The Densmen”, in Piedmont, NC. He was the last surviving member of that group.
Lohr was a teacher, coach, and Assistant Principal at Jamestown Jr. High School where he won the Outstanding Teacher Award three times and was a finalist for Outstanding Teacher Regional Award.
He served as Headmaster of John C. Calhoun Academy and Robert E. Lee Academy and served one year as the President of the SC Independent School Association.
He served the public schools of Colleton County as Principal, Director of Schools, Associate Superintendent, and Interim Superintendent
Lohr was a participant in the first class trained in the SC Department of Education and became a Certified Principal Assessor by that department.
A past member of the Walterboro City Council, he was the recipient of Outstanding Leadership awards by both the Colleton County School District and the Walterboro-Colleton Chamber of Commerce and until his illness was an active member of both the Lions Club and the Elks Club.
In addition, Lohr was a member of The American Contract Bridge Club attaining the rank of Regional Master; Member of U.S.T.A, LCTA and local WTA, tennis associations promoting tennis as a life-long sport.
In addition to his wife of the home, he is survived by son, Jonathan Thomas (Mary) Lohr of Beaufort, SC; Tracy Lohr Snipes (Tommy) of Charleston, WV; Stepchildren: Kent Whetsell (Ashley) of Bowman, SC; Lauren Whetsell Behie (Nathan) of Dorchester, SC; Ashley Whetsell Mansfield (Kyle) of Dacula, GA; and grandchildren, Clay Lohr, Chandler Stone, Sutton Behie, Grahame Behie, Maggie Behie,, McLaren Mansfield, Henry Mansfield, Brooks Whetsell and Daisy Whetsell.
Pallbearers are: James Breland, Doug Bullock, Buddy Creech, Bob Pence, Don Rizer, Phil Arrington, Joe Mesach, and Steward Goodwin
