James is the 9th child of William Pickering and Sarah Burton

On the 29 April 1865 he married Jane Saunby at Claxby Near Normanby, Lincolnshire, England, They had one child Herbert James born 1866, Osgodby, Lincolnshire, England
Jane died in 1866 at the age of 24

James then came out to New Zealand after 1871 leaving his son behind in England. He went on to marry Bethea Harrower Bauchop on the 7 Jan 1879 at Oamaru. They had 11 children.

DEATHS
PICKERING - On the 21st inst., (suddenly), at Lower Harbour, Port Chalmers, James the beloved husband of Bathia Pickering, 82 Royal crescent, Kew, South Dunedin (late of Lower Harbour), Port Chalmers; aged 72 years. Deeply regretted.

FUNERAL NOTICE
The Friends of Mrs Bathia Pickering (and family) are respectfully invited to attend the Funeral of her late beloved husband, James, which will leave her residence, 82 Royal crescent, Kew, South Dunedin, TO-MORROW (Thursday), the 24th inst., at 2 p.m., for the place of interment in the Anderson's Bay Cemetery.
