Neil Herbert Carlton, beloved husband, devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away August 3, 1994 at the age of 82, in his home in Orem, Utah of natural causes.
He was born May 7, 1912 in Jerome, Idaho, the son of Jay Strong and Jessie Edna Warren Carlton. He married Mary Belle Black and they were together for 59 years. She preceded him in death on January 1, 1993.
During World War II, Neil served in the United States Navy as a watchmaker. For 65 years he worked as a jeweler and watchmaker in Boise, Idaho and Orem, Utah. He owned Carlton's Jewel Box and Carlton-Bellomy Jewelers in Boise, Idaho. Neil obtained Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Brigham Young University and was on the faculty of Utah Technical College (Now UVSC).
He enjoyed playing golf, swimming, music, playing the organ and guitar, singing, reading, and enjoying family activities. While he lived in Boise, he was president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce for Boise and was elected president of the Idaho State Junior Chamber of Commerce, president of the Lion's Club, served in the Elks Club (BPOE), and with the Boy Scouts of America.
In The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Neil was a counselor in the Boise Stake Mission presidency, counselor in two bishoprics in Boise and Orem, high councilor, high priests group leader, and teacher. He was CES area seminary coordinator and taught early morning seminary several years, YMMIA, and Sunday School, and led the ward choir many years. With Belle, he served in the Michigan Dearborn Mission. He also served at the Provo Temple.
Survivors include three daughters and one son: Mrs. Ralph (Elaine) Rowley of Provo, Utah; Mrs. D. Milton (Karen) Moon of Sandy, Utah; Mrs. Robert N. (Linda) Thiess of Federal Way, Washington; and Ray W. and Marcene (Grange) Carlton of Gillette, Wyoming; 20 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren; two living brothers: Ramon S. Carlton of Newport Beach, Oregon; and Lloyd D. Carlton of Boise, Idaho.
Funeral services were held August 8, 1994 in the Sharon Park 1st Ward Chapel in Orem. Graveside services were held August 9, 1994 in the Cloverdale Cemetery in Boise, Idaho.
