Married Kitty Ann Read on July 22, 1828 in Mercer County, KY.


Moved with his parents to Indiana at the age of 10. Attended Ohio Medical College in Cincinnati and practiced in Greencastle, IN and later Rockville, IN. In 1837 he moved to Burlington, Iowa and practiced there for 10 years. In 1847 he was appointed Receiver of Public Moneys at the Land Office in Iowa City and in 1853 was appointed to the same office in Kanesville, Iowa. He organized the Council Bluffs and Nebraska Ferry Company. He was a member of both Iowa Constitution Conventions and Senate President. He was also active in organizing the Omaha Gas Company, the Omaha and Southwest Railroad Company, the State Bank of Nebraska, and the (Omaha) Grand Central Hotel Company. He was a surgeon in the 1st NE regiment during the Civil War and was the division surgeon for the army of the Cumberland.
