Married Mary Jane. Came to Omaha in 1857 from Cork, Ireland with his wife Mary Jane and his son James, and worked as a peace officer. On June 26 1870, Constable McCheane along with Col. James Mulcahy and Patrick Rockbud went to the home of Bernard Doran to arrest him for a complaint of adultery. In an ensuing struggle McCheane was fatally injured, Mulcahy was seriously injured, and Rockbud was slightly injured. Doran fled but was captured, tried, convicted and sentenced to life in prison, only to escape during a fire never to be found again.
