Newman was the grandson of John and Thankful Slade Weeks. (John Weeks was an early settler from Washington, Conn., and located in Clarendon on a farm in 1787. Newman Weeks, of Rutland, is his grandson. From the "History of Rutland County Vermont with Illustrations and Biographical Sketches of Some of Its Prominent Men and Pioneers." Edited by Smith & Rann Syracuse, N. Y. D. Mason & Co., Publishers 1886 History of the Town of Rutland.)

Newman married Rebecca M French in Clarendon, VT in 1848. They had at least three children: Robert N (buried in this cemetery), Martha/Mattie A (probably buried in this cemetery - there is a small stone in this area with no date and only the name Martha on it), and Lois (also probably buried in this cemetery - there is a small stone in this area with no date and only the name Lois on it). Rebecca died in 1858. Newman secondly married Jeannie Pettee, daughter of Sarah and Asa Pettee. Newman and Jennie had at least three children: Gertrude born 19 May 1861 and died 31 December 1861 and probably buried in West Street Cemetery, an unnamed son born 30 Dec 1863 and died 31 Dec 1863 in Rutland (Rutland Town Hall records, Book 10, pages 77 and 100), and an unnamed son born in 1864 and died 6 June 1864 (Rutland Town Hall records, Book 11, pages 5 and 50).
