Elmer Chester Lane Sr., 77, of Cheryl Lane, South Clinton, died Aug. 24 at Fort Sanders Park west Medical Center. He had been sick since July, a relative said.
Mr. Lane, a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oak Ridge, was a self-employed contractor/carpenter.
He was a World War II veteran of the Army Air Force. While serving in England, he met his wife, Margaret (Peggy) Lane, who survives him. They were married Oct. 16, 1943 in Bedford, England.
A Newport native, his father was the late Arthur Lane. His mother, Lorraine Fox Lane, lives in West Wolf Valley near Clinton.
He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Lorna Lane Oerther; sister, Charlsie Bardill; and a brother, James Lane.
Survivors also include five daughters, Sister Mary Reginald (Josephine) Lane of St. Cecilia Convent, Nashville; Vivian Ruth Littlejohn and her husband, Phillip of Powell; Sandra Willoughby and husband, Ernest, of Oak Ridge; Una York and husband, Duane of Clinton; and Nona Lovell and husband, Staley of Columbia; five sons, John V. Lane and wife Jane, of Clinton; Elmer C. Lane Jr. and wife Kathy, of Oak Ridge; Leo Lane and wife Doris, of Temple, TX; Thomas (Toddy) Lane of Clinton and Derek Lane of Belton, TX; and a son-in-law, Joseph Oerther of Frankfort, KY; 12 grandchildren, Brian, Erin, Brent, Sean and Meagan Oerther, all of Frankfort; John and Jason Lane, Eric and Stacy York, all of Clinton; Brittney and Dustin Lane, both of Temple, and Kaley Lovell of Columbia; a step-grandson, Shane Ogle of Oak Ridge; six sisters, Daisy Keith of Santa Fe Springs, CA; Dixie Godfrey of CA; Roxie Sims of Knoxville; Lucille Bearden, Dorothy Bryant, Alice Webber, all of Clinton; brothers, Walter, Paul and Jay Lane, all of Clinton; several nieces and nephews. His 13th grandchild is expected in January.
Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Bill Gahagan and the Rev. Chris Michelson officiating.
Burial was in Grandview Memorial Gardens in Clinton, with full military honors at the grave conducted by Volunteer State Honor Guards.
Holley-Gamble Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
