Melvin Sheya of Arvada, a businessman, died April 12 in Arvada. He was 78.

Services were April 24 at Newcomer Mortuary in Lakewood. Interment with military honors was at Arvada Cemetery.

He was born Aug. 24, 1917, in Utah. He was a survivor of the Fourth Regiment of the Marine Corps known as the "Old China Hands," who were among the first Americans sent into battle in World War II. During the war, he was a prisoner of the Japansese Imperial Army for 3 1/2 years. After his rescue and return to the United States, he published a book about his experiences as a prisoner and when he was in the Battle for Corregidor during the Bataan Death March.

He and his wife, Patricia Payne, recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Sheya and his sons owned and operated a new-age beverage distributorship, Sheya Brothers Distributing, until his retirement in 1988.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Danny, Lakewood, and Paddy, Arvada; a daughter, Janet Awan, Aurora; a brother, Jerry, Utah; two sisters, Evelyn Akerman and Jo Malouf, both of Fort Collins; and three grandchildren.
