Roscoe F. Lockney, Jr., 85, of Parkersburg, WV, passed away Thursday, May 12, 2011, at the Camden Clark Medical Center, St. Joseph's Campus, following a brief illness.Roscoe was born July 29, 1925 at Parkersburg (Cedar Grove Community), the 8th of 9 children, to the late Roscoe F. and Vena (McKee) Lockney, Sr.

He attended Cedar Grove grade school, Parkersburg Jr. High and later graduated from Parkersburg High School with the class of 1943. Following graduation, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps as an aviation cadet in 1943. He attended basic training at Keesler Field then was assigned to Colby College in Waterville, ME. He had pre-flight and OCS in Montgomery, AL and later graduated from Primary Aerobatic School at Ludwig Air School in Lakeland, FL where the war correspondent, Lowell Thomas handed him his diploma. He then went to South Dakota to attend Basic Pilot and Aerial Radio Operator's school. Upon graduation in South Dakota, he was assigned overseas to the Mariana Islands with the AACS unit during World War II.On return from the war, he attended Marietta College and went to work for the postal service as a clerk.

He served on a Regional Postal team in Portland, ME and later advanced to the position of Customer Service Manager for 25 years and acting postmaster both in Parkersburg and in New Martinsville, WV. After his retirement in 1981, he ran a successful mail service called AdMail of Parkersburg.Mr. Lockney served the Washington, WV area as president of the Washington Lions club and as founder and president of the Tri-C baseball league. He was past president of the Parkersburg Lions Club, a member of the Mt. Olivet Masonic Lodge #3 where he had the honor of being raised to the 33rd degree KCCH Scottish Mason, and served as Master of Scottish Rite Lodge of Perfection and the Rose Croix. Roscoe was a member of the American Legion Post #15 of Parkersburg, a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Parkersburg, where he was an active member and past president of the Seekers Sunday School Class, and served on several committees. He loved his grandchildren, gardening, and golfing.

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Sybil (McDermott) Lockney; two sons, Gary Lee Lockney (Sharon), Mineral Wells, WV and Dr. Michael Lockney (Cynthia), Parkersburg; grandchildren, Rebecca Marshall (Rick), Gary William Lockney, Dustin Lockney, Jason Lockney, Elizabeth Lockney, and four great grandchildren, Kaitlyn & Zachary Lockney and Elijah & Alec Marshall.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Patrick, Idell, Aileen, William, Phyllis, Patricia, and Sara Suzanne.

Funeral services will be at 1pm, Monday, May 16, 2011, at the Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with the Rev. Tom McDowell officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Parkersburg, where full military honors will be presented by American Legion Post #15, and full Masonic Rites conducted by Mt. Olivet Masonic Lodge #3, Parkersburg. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2-4 and 6-8pm on Sunday.
