Floyd Grover “Dick” Abernathy, Jr., age 73, of Douglasville passed away Saturday, May 25, 2019. He was born in Scott County, Tennessee, on September 10, 1945, the son of the late Floyd G. Abernathy, Sr., and the late Annie Mae Vandiver Abernathy. Following graduation from high school, Dick joined the United States Navy. Following his discharge he worked as a painter for a local union until becoming a Maintenance Engineer for Piedmont Driving Club where he worked until his retirement. Dick is a member of Central Baptist Church in Douglasville.
Dick loved fishing and going on picnics. He loved his dog, Roxy. He had an infectious laugh and a smile that brightened everyone’s day!
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his daughter, Shelby Tucker and his brother, Dennis Abernathy.
He is survived by his wife, Cheryl Crumbley Abernathy of Douglasville; children: David Abernathy and his wife, Barbara of Newnan; daughter and son-in-law: Lisa Stowers-Hutchens and her husband, Ricky of Villa Rica; sisters and brothers-in-law: Peggy Hallmark and Mike Hulsey of Douglasville, Wanda Cohen of Tifton, and Shelby and Charles Moore of Florida; grandchildren: Shawn Stowers, Holly Abernathy, and Heather Abernathy; sister-in-law: Wanda Abernathy; 4 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Hightower’s Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, May 28, 2019, from 5:00-8:00 P.M.
The Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, May 29, 2019, at 11:00 A.M. at Hightower’s Memorial Chapel with Pastor Steve McFall and Reverend Ron Whalen officiating.
Interment will follow in Sunrise Memorial Gardens with Military Funeral Honors.
