Clara Parker-Alvis, 100, of Athens, died peacefully early Friday morning, January 12, 2018 at her home. Mrs. Alvis was educated in Mercer County, earning a Bachelors & Masters Degree in Education.  She was a retired teacher, having taught school in Mercer County for nearly 40 years.  She was of the Methodist faith and was devoted to her family.

Born June 27, 1917 at War Ridge, she was the daughter of the late Lennie Bird Parker (1879-1959) & Mattie Ellen Nelson-Parker (1884-1970). In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn A. Alvis (1912-1994) whom she married on November 18, 1942 in Princeton, Mercer County, WV (per WV Marriage License Register, Mercer County, WV, 1942, Page 26, Line 44, Application Date: November 18, 1942); and six brothers and sister, Otey "Roy" Parker (1902-1991), John "Harry" Parker (1904-1993), Frank Bird Parker (1907-2001), Robert "Lee" Parker (1911-1987), Fred Welsh Parker (1919-2006), Opie J. Parker (1924-1937) & Ruby Parker-Lytton (1908-1995).  She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Those left to cherish her memory, her two sons & spouses, Derk Alvis & wife Linda Alvis, G. Len Alvis & wife Frankie Jo Alvis; grandchildren, Jonathan Alvis & wife Michelle Alvis, Alisha Alvis-Taylor & husband Adam Taylor, Kevin Alvis & wife Leslie Alvis; great grandchildren, Evelyn Sue Alvis & Lucas Avery Alvis; numerous nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly; and special friends Eddie Kessinger & wife Joyce Kessinger, Ted Kessinger & wife Anne Kessinger.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 A.M. Monday, January 15, 2018 at the Athens Cemetery in Athens with Pastors Carolyn & Jonathan Nettles officiating. Those wishing to attend these services are requested to meet at the cemetery by the service hour. There will be no visitation at the funeral home.
