Varey - On Sunday, December 27, 1953, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Norman Maltby, 5th Line East, Brampton, ON, Elizabeth Totten in her 82nd year, wife of the late Luke Varey and dear mother of Gladys (Mrs. E. Speers), of Brampton, and Alice (Mrs. H. Maltby), of R. R. 1, Malton, and sister of Mrs. Rachel Adair, of Brampton. Rested at the David A. McClure Funeral Home, 52 Main St. S., Brampton. Service in the chapel Tuesday, Dec. 29. Interment St. John’s Cemetery, 7th Line, Mono.

Mrs. Elizabeth Varey, passed peacefully away, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Norman Maltby, in her 82nd year, on December 27, 1953. Mrs. Varey’s maiden name was Elizabeth Totten. Mrs. Varey’s death came after a gradual decline. Her husband, Luke Varey, predeceased her on March 15, 1922. She was also predeceased by three daughters, Florence (20 years old), in March, 1926, and Elva and Ida, as infants.
Mrs. Varey was extremely active until she became bedfast in October. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Gladys Speers, of Brampton, and Mrs. Norman Maltby (Alice), of Bolton, and one sister, Mrs. Geo. Adair (Rachael), of Brampton. There are six grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Varey was born in Adjala Township and lived the greater part of her life in the Mono Mills district before moving to live with her daughter. She was a member of St. John’s Anglican Church on the 7th Line, Mono.
The funeral service was held in the chapel of D. McClure in Brampton at 2 p.m. on Dec. 29th, 1953. The service was conducted by Rev. Westcott, minister of Grahamsville United Church, after which burial took place in St. John’s Cemetery, on the 7th Line, Mono. Pallbearers were Messrs. Mervyn Speers, Bill Lansdell, Robert Wright, Norman Steele, Gordon Walker and Errol Payne. The flower bearers were Cecil Reid, Eric Maltby, Gault Kidd, Bill Murdock, Waldon Speers and Gerald Tortington.
