His parents are not proven, however material sent to me by others show similarities in the naming of children of another Hill family, such as Judith and Wiliam but in order to sort out the discrepancies I need to access original files. Too much seems inconsistently put together and may be men of the same name but not the same men. William signed undated permission slip daughter Judith for her marriage bond dated Oct 1786 in Amherst. Susannah Gilliland had will dated 1808 naming only 2 daughters directly and 1 son indirectly so not all children may be known yet. She may be the Susannah Gilliland in 1785 tax list which contradicts William living until 1786. The info is inconsistent and we can't find William's estate record which would help narrow down his death date. Could they have divorced? If not, why are the dates inconsistent?

BIRTH: Estimated birth based on estimated ages of children but children also estimates. Need more records.

MARRIAGE: Marriage record not found. Courthouse records in Amherst do not go back that far. Susanna is mother of the 3 Hill kids since she names them as her children in her will.

DEATH: No date of death was found. He may have been living in Oct 1786 when his dau Judith got married and submitted a marriage bond with his signature. He was deceased by Mar 1787 when his wife witnessed a deed as Susanna Gilliland. But we also find a 1785 tax list for Susanna Gilliland so did he die in 1784 or 5 and the marriage bond permission slip was signed years before? We cannot find an estate or administration for him in Amherst. Did he die somewhere else? We also have not found the date of marriage of Susanna to the second husband Gilliland or his full name. Since the permission slip attached to the bond was not dated, he could have signed it prior to Oct 1786

SERVICE: William Hill is listed as a private in the American Revolution from Amherst Co on Feb. 26 1776 in Capt. Samuel Jordan Cabell's Company per Hardesty's Historical and Geographical Encyclopedia, 1884. Also Nat. and Isaac Hill served in same company.

SERVICE: Library of Virginia Legislative Petition Data Base. Hill, William: Amherst County: 1792/10/11: Asks for a duplicate military certificates in place of lost originals. Includes certificates. (This later record could mean a second William Hill in the Amherst area or that the William Hill did not die but maybe divorced Susanna?)

SAR: William Hill is proven as a private in the Sons of the American Revolution by descendent Christos Christou, Jr. #130571 as a supplemental application approved in October 2004.

The family of William Hill is discussed in Augusta Co Heritage Book 1998 p. 169 submitted by Christos Christou, Jr.

Other possibilities.
On the issue of John of Amelia's son William: Records show that the administrators for the estate of John Hill of Amelia Co. published a legal notice in the March 26, 1785 edition of the Virginia Gazette and American Advertiser (Richmond) in an attempt to notify the children of William Hill, of the inheritance from their grandfather in Amelia Co. Among other things, the notice stated that William Hill had married in King William County about 1765.

The William Hill who married Martha Davis had adult children when he wrote his 15 Dec 1770 will. In fact, he had at least 3 married daughters and sons who owned their own land. Clearly, a fellow who married in 1765 would not have had any adult children in 1770. So we John of Amelia's son William may not be the fellow married to Martha Davis unless Martha was a second wife. That William was too old. Judging from his children's likely birth years, he was roughly the same age as John or perhaps a bit older.

The other thing we know about John's son William is that he was dead before 11 February 1777, when John Hill of Amelia wrote his will.

William Hill's DNA through his known son Madison matches the descendants of the sons of John Hill of Amelia County VA for 65 of 67 markers. It also matches 64 of 67 markers for the John Hill's brother William Hill. It might mean that our William Hill is the grandson of John Hill through one of his sons.

2› William Hill [828.H1.2] was dead when his father wrote his will in 1777 and he described him as such in it. He had previously married and had children.
