Rufus married his first cousin (his mother's brother's daughter), Mary Tuttle, on December 18, 1777 in Wallingford, Connecticut. They were the parents of:
Sabrina Atwater who married Morgan Connors,
Luman Atwater who married Mary Key,
Adolpus Atwater who married Mary Ann Murphy
William Atwater who married (1) Mary Elizabeth Elliot and (2) Catherine Babson
and Esther Atwater who married William Stropple.
Rufus died in a sawmill accident by a rolling log. He was 35 years old. There presently is no stone in this cemetery for Rufus, but according to Record of Burials for Christ Church in Guysborough, Rufus is buried here.
His widow later married Elisha Randall.
