Born in Baltimore in 1932, C. H. Rockey (Charles Harry Rockey Jr.) came to Colorado at age five when his father, a career Naval officer and Annapolis graduate, contracted tuberculosis and was sent to Denver's Fitzsimmon's Army Hospital for treatment.

Rockey developed a love of nature that led him to hike, climb and roam the mountainsides every chance he got. He graduated from Evergreen High School in 1950 and spent a semester at the University of Colorado. After that he went to study art at the Art Institute of Chicago.

After serving in the military, Rockey got married a second time and acquired an M.A. in Art Education at Ohio State. Eventually he had a 25-year art teaching career in District 11, most of it at North Junior High. He took an early retirement in 1972, moved to Manitou Springs and devoted himself solely to art.

Rockey has devoted the rest of his life to painting, sketching and creating architectural oddities, winding stairways, sidestreet alleyways, out-of-the-way gardens, picturesque waysides and mountainside panoramas of Manitou Springs.

Rockey was preceded in death by his son Ivan. He is survived by a son, Noah Rockey.

There is so much more to say about this fascinating character. I will add more details later…

Here is an excellent mini-documentary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-l_rB82fbiM
